Sealants reduce the presence of cavities by up to 80%. This is a relatively simple procedure, which can be performed quickly in the office. Learn who can benefit from sealants and how we can ensure their effectiveness over time.

Who’s a Good Candidate for Sealant?

Many patients can benefit from a reduction of cavities, but sealant is most commonly applied to the following patients:

  • Babies with teeth that are more difficult to clean
  • Children who are still learning how to practice good oral care
  • People with a condition that puts them at higher risk for cavities

Which teeth we choose to seal will vary depending on the patient. Molars are the most common teeth that we seal because they can be more difficult to clean, and they’re more likely to get cavities.

It’s worth noting that sealant doesn’t protect restorations or implants.

Sealant Aftercare

In the immediate aftermath of sealant application, you don’t need to follow any dietary restrictions. You’re free to eat and drink as you normally would.

Once the sealant has been applied, it can last for up to eight years. That said, it’s at its most effective for the two years following application. We’ll also check on it during your regular dental visits.

You should still follow all normal oral care procedures, such as brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day.
